Of the roughly 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, a large proportion are at risk of disappearing within this century. Most endangered languages are spoken by small communities, (7) _______. Linguists often compare the death of a language to the burning of a library (9) _______.
Fortunately, this decline is not always irreversible. (10) _______, some communities have brought their languages back from the edge. Read the following passage about checking information online and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 12 to 19.
How do professional fact-checkers decide whether a website can be trusted? In one well-known study, researchers asked three groups of people — experienced academics, university students and professional fact-checkers — to evaluate a series of unfamiliar websites. The results were surprising. Despite their education, the academics and students were often taken in by sites that looked professional but were in fact run by groups with a hidden agenda. The fact-checkers, on the other hand, reached more accurate conclusions in far less time.
The difference lay in how they read. The academics and students read "vertically": they stayed on the page, studied its design, examined its "About us" section and judged it by the way it presented itself. The fact-checkers, by contrast, read "laterally". Within seconds of landing on an unfamiliar site, they opened new browser tabs and searched for what independent sources said about it. In other words, they learnt more about a website by leaving it than by staying on it.
This finding challenges much of the traditional advice given to young people, such as checking whether a site looks professional or has an official-sounding name. Such signs are easy to fake. Today, anyone with basic skills can build an attractive website within hours, and misleading organisations often choose names that sound neutral or scientific.
Lateral reading also involves resisting the urge to click on the first result. Fact-checkers tend to scan the whole page of search results before deciding where to go, a habit sometimes called "click restraint". This small pause helps them avoid sources that appear at the top of the list simply because they have paid to be there or have been designed to attract clicks.
The good news is that lateral reading can be taught. Short classroom programmes have shown that secondary school students can learn the basic moves in a few lessons, and that their ability to spot unreliable sources improves as a result. In an age when information spreads faster than ever, such skills may be just as essential as reading and writing themselves.
- Câu 12
According to paragraph 1, what was surprising about the results of the study?
- A.The fact-checkers outperformed the academics and students in both accuracy and speed.
- B.The students judged the websites more accurately than the academics did.

Read the following passage about artificial intelligence and work and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
Every major wave of technology has been accompanied by fears of mass unemployment, and artificial intelligence is no exception. Headlines regularly warn that machines will soon replace lawyers, journalists and even doctors. Yet many economists argue that such predictions misread how technology actually changes work. Rather than eliminating entire jobs, they say, new tools tend to take over particular tasks, reshaping occupations instead of wiping them out.
History offers a useful example. [I] When cash machines spread in the late twentieth century, many people predicted the end of the bank clerk. [II] Because each branch now needed fewer clerks, it became cheaper to run one, and banks opened more branches. [III] For years, the total number of clerks in some countries actually grew, although their work shifted from counting cash towards advising customers and selling financial products. [IV]
Something similar may happen with AI. Systems that can draft documents, summarise reports or answer routine questions are already changing office work. Several recent studies suggest that, at least in the short term, such tools help less experienced workers the most: by giving them quick access to the kind of know-how that once took years to acquire, AI can narrow the gap between beginners and experts.
None of this means that the transition will be painless. Workers whose tasks are largely routine face real risks, and new jobs do not always appear in the same places, or require the same skills, as the old ones. A factory worker who loses her job cannot simply become a data analyst overnight. For this reason, many experts argue that the greatest challenge is social rather than technological: societies need training systems that allow people to update their skills throughout their working lives.
Ultimately, the impact of AI on work will depend less on what machines can do than on the choices made by businesses, governments and individuals. Used wisely, these technologies could free people from repetitive work and allow them to focus on the creative and interpersonal sides of their jobs, areas in which humans still hold a clear advantage. Used carelessly, they could widen inequality. The future of work, in other words, is not something that will simply happen to us; it is something we will shape.
